High blood pressure does not cause pain or discomfort, however, it can cause significant complications including heart attack, kidney failure or stroke.

Those at risk for high blood pressure include:

• African American and Hispanic populations
• Men over the age of 55 or post-menopausal women
• People with high cholesterol or diabetes
• People who smoke or are overweight

We are conducting a research study evaluating the effectiveness of an investigational medication in combination with an approved medication to treat high blood pressure.

To qualify, participants must be at least 18 years of age and have known or suspected high blood pressure. All study related care and study medication will be provided.

Blood pressure medications can be costly and often have undesirable side effects. Duke University Medical Center is conducting the ENCORE Research Study, an investigation of how diet and exercise affect high blood pressure.

To be eligible, you should:

• Not be taking any blood pressure medications
• Have blood pressure 130/85 or greater
• Be at least 35 years of age
• Be mildly to moderately overweight

Study benefits may include:

• Exercise and nutrition program
• Free medical assessments
• 2 weeks of free food
• Up to $355 reimbursement

Have you been diagnosed with, or think you may have high blood pressure?

If so, you may qualify for a research study of an investigational medication to treat high blood pressure.

Qualified candidates must be a least 18 years of age.

If you qualify for this study, you may receive at no cost:

• Study related physical exam and laboratory testing
• Investigational study medication or placebo (you havea a 1 in 12 chance of receiving placebo during part of the study)
